Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans and Their Survivors (Veterans Property Tax Exemption)
Lowers the taxable value of an eligible veteran's home by at least $10,000 (towns can vote to raise it to as much as $40,000) before property taxes are calculated.
Who it is for
Vermont veterans who own and live in their home and have a VA disability rating of 50% or higher, receive a non-service-connected VA pension, or get permanent military medical retirement pay. Surviving spouses who already had the exemption can also qualify. Renters do not qualify.

How to apply
- Get your proof of eligibility from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (call (800) 827-1000 or request it online); call the VA by April 1 so you have it in time.
- Send your proof of eligibility to the Vermont Office of Veterans Affairs, 118 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05620-4401.
- Veterans who are totally and permanently disabled only need to submit proof one time; everyone else must re-submit each year.
Deadline: Applications must be received before May 1 each year to apply to that year's property taxes. (Annual cycle)
