Funding State Commonwealth of Virginia (state law), applied by your local commissioner of the revenue or assessor's office

Virginia Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption

Virginia law exempts from real estate tax the home and up to one acre of land of a veteran the VA has rated 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disabled, when that home is the veteran's principal residence. A surviving spouse who does not remarry can keep the exemption if the veteran died on or after January 1, 2011.

Who it is for

Virginia homeowners who have been rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as having a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability and who live in the home as their principal residence, plus qualifying surviving spouses who have not remarried.

Focus: Veterans with disabilities, Surviving spouses and families

Before you start

How you apply: Application path varies.

This is a benefit written into Virginia law, but you apply through your local commissioner of the revenue or assessor's office, since real estate tax is handled at the city or county level.

How to apply

  1. Get your VA disability rating letter showing a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability rating.
  2. Contact the commissioner of the revenue or assessor's office in the Virginia city or county where you own your home to get their application form.
  3. Submit the application with your VA rating letter and proof that the home is your principal residence.

Deadline: There is no single statewide deadline. The exemption can start from your VA rating date, so apply through your local commissioner of the revenue or assessor as soon as you have your rating letter. Filing rules can vary by locality. (Rolling, apply any time)
