Hazlewood Act Tuition Exemption (Hazlewood Act)
Waives tuition and most fees for up to 150 credit hours at Texas public colleges and universities. It does not cover books, housing, meals, or living expenses.
Who it is for
Veterans who served at least 181 days of active duty, were discharged honorably or under honorable conditions, and listed Texas as their home of record or entered service in Texas. Spouses and dependent children of veterans rated 100 percent disabled can qualify for their own exemption, and the Legacy program lets a veteran pass unused hours to a child under age 26. Apply through the school you attend.

How to apply
- Register in the statewide Hazlewood student database and gather your DD-214 and, if you served after September 10, 2001, your VA education benefits letter.
- Submit the Hazlewood application and your documents to the veterans certifying official or financial aid office at the Texas public college or university you attend.
- Reapply or recertify each school year following your school's process.
Deadline: There is no statewide deadline; each Texas public college sets its own submission dates for each semester. (Rolling, apply any time)
