New York State Supplemental Burial Allowance
Pays surviving family members up to $6,000 toward funeral and burial costs that federal benefits do not cover, for service members who died in combat or in hostile-fire or hazardous-duty conditions.
Who it is for
Family members who paid part or all of the funeral or burial costs for a service member who was a New York resident at death, or who was in the New York Army or Air National Guard when called to the active duty during which they died. The death must have occurred in a combat zone, while receiving hazardous duty pay, or from wounds sustained in those conditions.

- Complete the Supplemental Burial Allowance application, available from DVS or by calling 1-888-838-7697.
- Gather documents showing the circumstances of death, New York residency or National Guard status, your relationship to the service member, the funeral costs you paid, and any federal VA burial benefits already received.
- Submit the application and documents to the Department of Veterans' Services; a Veterans Benefits Advisor can help you file at no cost.
