Funding State New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services

Veteran and Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption (NM Veteran Property Tax Exemption)

Reduces the property tax on a veteran's home. Veterans get up to $10,000 taken off the taxable value of their property, and veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating can get an exemption equal to their disability percentage.

Who it is for

New Mexico resident veterans who served at least 90 continuous days on active duty (or were discharged early due to a service-connected disability) and were honorably discharged. Un-remarried surviving spouses of qualifying veterans can also apply. The disabled veteran version requires a VA finding of service-connected disability.

Focus: Veterans with disabilities, Surviving spouses and families

Before you start

How you apply: Apply directly to the program.

How to apply

  1. Fill out DVS Form 1 (Veteran Tax Exemption and Disabled Veteran Tax Exemption application) and gather your DD-214, proof of New Mexico residency, and (for the disabled exemption) your VA disability finding.
  2. Submit the application by mail, email, or in person to the New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services, which reviews it and issues a Certificate of Eligibility.
  3. Take the original certificate to your county assessor's office to apply the exemption to your property taxes.

Deadline: You can apply any time. There is no annual deadline, but you need the certificate in hand before your county assessor can apply the exemption. (Rolling, apply any time)

Amount: Up to $10,000 off taxable property value (veteran exemption); disabled veteran exemption matches the VA disability rating percentage
