North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Program (NC State Veterans Cemeteries)

Provides a free burial plot for qualified veterans at one of North Carolina's four state veterans cemeteries, with a government headstone installed at no charge. A burial fee applies for eligible spouses and family members.

Who it is for

Former members of the U.S. Armed Forces whose active duty service, other than for training, ended under honorable conditions, plus eligible spouses, minor children, and adult children disabled before age 18. North Carolina residency requirements apply.

How to apply

  1. Contact the superintendent of the cemetery you want: Western Carolina in Black Mountain, Sandhills in Spring Lake, Eastern Carolina in Goldsboro, or Coastal Carolina in Jacksonville. Contacts are on the program page.
  2. Have the veteran's DD Form 214 (discharge paperwork) ready to verify honorable service.
  3. At time of need, the family or funeral director works directly with the cemetery to arrange the committal service.

Deadline: There is no application deadline. Arrangements are made with the cemetery superintendent, and eligibility questions can be answered in advance. (Rolling, apply any time)
