Montana State Veterans Cemetery Program (State Veterans Cemetery Burial)
Montana runs state veterans cemeteries where eligible veterans are buried at no cost. The plot, opening and closing of the grave, the headstone, and perpetual care are free for the veteran. Spouses and dependents pay reduced fees.
Who it is for
Veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable with enough qualifying service, plus their eligible spouses and dependents. Montana also allows some Guard and Reserve members who do not meet standard veteran rules to be buried here under the Burial Equity for Guards and Reserves Act. Contact the cemetery manager to confirm eligibility.

How to apply
- Gather the veteran's military discharge document (DD Form 214, NGB Form 22, or DD Form 1300) and the death certificate.
- Complete the Application for Interment and the Headstone Inscription Request form.
- Contact the cemetery manager at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison, 406-324-4793, or the Montana Veteran Affairs Division at 406-324-3742, to arrange the burial.
