Michigan Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption

Cancels the property taxes on the home a qualifying disabled veteran owns and lives in. An unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who qualified keeps the exemption, including on a home bought after the veteran's death.

Who it is for

Michigan resident veterans discharged under honorable conditions who the VA rates permanently and totally disabled at the 100 percent rate, or rates individually unemployable, or who have a VA certificate showing they received specially adapted housing assistance. Also unremarried surviving spouses of veterans who were eligible before they died.

How to apply

  1. Get your VA documentation showing you meet one of the qualifying disability criteria.
  2. Fill out Form 5107, the State Tax Commission Affidavit for Disabled Veterans Exemption.
  3. File the form and your VA documentation with the assessor for the city or township where your home is, after January 1 and before December 31 of the year you want the exemption.

Deadline: File with your local assessor between January 1 and December 31 of the year you are claiming. Exemptions granted for 2025 and later stay in place without reapplying until you rescind them or the assessor denies them. (Annual cycle)
