Resource State Bureau of Maine Veterans' Services

Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery System

Maine operates four state veterans cemeteries where eligible veterans can be buried at no cost. The state provides the plot, opening and closing of the grave, and perpetual care, and the federal government provides the headstone, marker, or niche cover. Eligible spouses and dependents can be buried at no charge.

Who it is for

Veterans with a discharge other than dishonorable, including current and former National Guard and Reserve members, plus their spouses and eligible dependents. Maine residency is not required, but a veteran who is not a Maine resident and did not live in Maine for at least five years may owe an interment fee.
