Disabled Veteran Sales Tax Exemption
Lets qualifying 100% disabled veterans skip Kansas sales tax on up to $24,000 of purchases per calendar year, using a state-issued exemption card.
Who it is for
Kansas resident veterans who were honorably discharged and are certified by the VA as 100% disabled or as totally disabled/unemployable due to a permanent, service-connected condition. Surviving spouses of a veteran who met these qualifications and died on or after July 1, 2026 can also qualify, until they remarry.

How to apply
- Get your DD Form 214 and either your VA Award Letter or VA Benefit Summary Letter showing your 100% or unemployable rating.
- Apply online through the Kansas Department of Revenue's application system for faster processing, or mail in paper Form K-97.
- Once approved, use your Disabled Veteran Sales Tax Exemption Certificate Card at checkout on qualifying purchases; renew the card every 3 years.
Deadline: No annual deadline. You can apply any time; the exemption itself became active July 1, 2026, and the card must be renewed every 3 years. (Rolling, apply any time)
Amount: Sales tax exemption on up to $24,000 in purchases per calendar year (does not cover tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, or motor vehicles)
