Iowa Veterans Cemetery Burial Benefit (Iowa Veterans Cemetery)

Burial at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel is free for eligible veterans, including ground burial and a standard granite headstone or niche marker. There is a $300 interment fee for an eligible spouse or dependent child. Living in Iowa is not required to be eligible.

Who it is for

Veterans discharged from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, those who died on active duty, and qualifying Guard or Reserve members, plus their spouses and dependent children.

How to apply

  1. Establish eligibility ahead of time (pre-need) by completing a pre-registration application with the Iowa Veterans Cemetery Service Office, which is free and does not obligate burial there.
  2. At the time of need, the funeral director provides proof of honorable service, such as a DD-214, to the cemetery.
  3. Contact the Iowa Veterans Cemetery Service Office at (515) 996-9048 with questions or for an eligibility determination.

Deadline: No deadline. Eligibility can be established in advance (pre-need) at any time, or at the time of death. (Rolling, apply any time)
