Soldiers', Sailors' and Marines' Fund (SSMF)
A Connecticut state fund that gives temporary emergency financial help to wartime veterans and their families facing hardship, covering things like food, clothing, housing, utilities, and medical costs. It is not long-term assistance; it is meant to bridge a crisis.
Who it is for
Connecticut resident veterans who were honorably discharged and served at least 90 days of active duty during a recognized wartime period (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Lebanon, Grenada, Earnest Will, or Panama), or who were discharged early for a service-connected disability. Assistance can extend to a spouse living with the veteran and to natural or adopted children under 18 living with the veteran.
Before you start
How you apply: Apply through a partner organization.
Applications go through a local Fund Representative or Veterans Aid Investigator, usually found through your town's American Legion Post, the Town/City Clerk's office, or the fund's own directory of volunteers by town.
How to apply
- Contact a Fund Representative or Veterans Aid Investigator in your town (ask your local American Legion Post or your Town/City Clerk for the name and contact info, or check the fund's town-by-town volunteer directory).
- Meet with the representative, who helps you fill out the application and tells you what documents you need (DD-214, photo ID, Social Security numbers, income and asset records, and similar).
- Sign and submit the application. If you are incapacitated or hospitalized, a spouse, adult child, parent, guardian, or someone with power of attorney can sign for you.
Deadline: No fixed deadline. Applications are accepted whenever a veteran has a financial need and can be submitted at any time through a local Fund Representative. (Rolling, apply any time)
