Funding State Arkansas county tax collectors, under Arkansas Code 26-3-306

Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

State law wipes out all state property tax on the home and personal property of a qualifying disabled veteran. There is no dollar cap; the exemption is complete for the property that qualifies.

Who it is for

Veterans with a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or veterans who receive VA special monthly compensation for loss (or loss of use) of a limb or for total blindness in one or both eyes. You must live in the home yourself; rental property and land-only parcels do not qualify. If the veteran dies, the exemption can continue for an unmarried surviving spouse and minor children, and it also applies to the surviving spouse and minor children of a service member killed on duty or declared missing in action. Some counties, including Pope County, require a surviving spouse to show she or he receives VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and to file a Surviving Spouse Affidavit, so confirm the exact paperwork with your own county collector.

Focus: Veterans with disabilities, Surviving spouses and families

Before you start

How you apply: Apply through your state.

You apply at your county tax collector's office, not through ADVA directly. The paperwork is the same statewide because it is set by state law, though some counties ask for extra proof for surviving spouses.

How to apply

  1. Get your VA Summary of Benefits letter (VA mails these each spring) showing your qualifying disability rating. If it does not show the date your disability became total and permanent, also get your VA Rating Decision letter.
  2. If you are a surviving spouse, some counties (Pope County, for example) also ask for proof you receive VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and a Surviving Spouse Affidavit from the collector's office, so ask your county what they need before you go in.
  3. Turn in your documents at your county tax collector's office. Contact your county collector or call ADVA at (501) 683-2382 if you are not sure which office to use.

Deadline: You must turn in your paperwork every year by October 15. Submit as soon as you get your Summary of Benefits letter in the spring. (Annual cycle)
