Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption (AK Disabled Vet Property Tax Exemption)

Reduces property taxes on the home of a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or more, by exempting part of the home's assessed value from local property tax. The exact exemption amount and rules are set by each municipality.

Who it is for

A veteran who owns and lives in their home as their primary residence and has a disability rating of 50% or higher, rated by military service or the federal VA, for a disability incurred or made worse in the line of duty. A surviving spouse age 60 or older may keep the exemption after the veteran dies. Some municipalities, such as Kodiak Island Borough, also require that the applicant qualify for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend.

Focus: Veterans with disabilities

Before you start

How you apply: Application path varies.

This exemption is set up by state law but each municipality or borough runs its own application process and deadline. Contact your local assessor's office to apply.

How to apply

  1. Contact the assessor's office for the municipality or borough where you live (for example, Anchorage, Kodiak Island, or Mat-Su).
  2. Bring or send proof of your VA or military disability rating letter (50% or higher) and proof that the home is your primary residence.
  3. Ask about that municipality's specific exemption amount, form, and yearly filing deadline, since these differ by location.

Deadline: Each municipality sets its own yearly filing deadline. As an example, Kodiak Island Borough requires the application by January 15 each year. Check with your local assessor's office for the exact date where you live. (Deadline varies)
